Rubies are the most precious variety of corundum, known best for its iconic red color. The most famous and rare rubies come from Myanmar (Burma). Mozambique also produces gorgeous colored rubies that are generally more clean than Burmese rubies. Since ancient history, this gem symbolises power and passion. Sapphires are incredible stones which come in a wide variety of colors. Historically, the most iconic sapphires are blue, but in recent years, pink sapphires have picked up in both interest and rarity. Kashmir Sapphires are arguably the most rare stone in the world given that the Kashmir mine has been closed for centuries. Currently, royal blue and vivid pink sapphires from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and Madagascar are considered very desirable. Commercially all the colors of corundum except red (Ruby) are called sapphires (Blue, Pink, Yellow, Green…).
