This precious gemstone is named after Zar Alexander II, who was the first collector to research the stone. This gem is the most precious variety of Chrysoberyl and can exhibit “chatoyancy” or a cat’s eye effect. Today, Alexandrites are found in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Brazil, India, and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). The most rare Alexandrites are the ones that are found in Russia, where the gem was originally discovered.
